Grabs

Our strength!

Whether steel coils, sheet metal packs, press tools or other workpieces – every load places specific demands on the lifting device. That’s why we design and manufacture grabs that combine safety, precision and durability. From standard designs to customised solutions, we deliver lifting devices tailored to your application that perform reliably even under demanding, continuous operating conditions.

NOVA module for grabs – when service life matters

The NOVA Plus module enhances the grab system with intelligent monitoring of actual operating loads. It records the actual load spectrum, providing a comprehensive picture of usage over time. This data enables a realistic calculation of the equipment’s service life and remaining service life, allowing maintenance to be planned based on the equipment’s actual condition.

  • Determination of the actual load spectrum from real operating data
  • Calculation of service life and remaining service life
  • Condition-based maintenance instead of fixed intervals
  • Real-time display of load weight on an XXL touchscreen
  • Increased safety and equipment availability through early detection of wear and overloads

Good to know!

What is the difference between the drive types?

  • Rotating roller chain: Drives the gripping arms via a chain. A slip clutch protects the motor against overload.
  • Spindle drive system: Two self-locking threaded spindles move the gripping arms. The key advantage is a high level of protection against unintended opening, for example when tilted or in the event of a collision.
  • Blocking system: Combines the safety of a spindle drive system with the cost-effectiveness of a chain drive. A specially developed damping system protects against incorrect operation, minimising damage in the event of a collision. Available exclusively from us!

Gripping range and opening width

  • Gripping range: The actual coil width or, for sheet metal packs, the pack width that the grab can handle.
  • Opening width: The maximum distance the gripping arms can open to. It is slightly greater than the actual gripping range, allowing enough clearance to position the grab easily around the coil or pack.

How is the inner height calculated?

For coils, the required inner height is calculated from the winding thickness (coil outer diameter minus coil inner diameter, divided by 2), plus approximately 150 mm clearance. It must therefore be large enough for the pad to fit underneath the coil across the full winding thickness, with additional safety clearance.

For sheet metal packs, the pack height itself is the determining factor. In this case, the winding thickness is irrelevant; the actual height of the stacked pack, plus additional clearance, must be taken into account.

Load safety system: what is it?

The load safety system consists of a cam follower in the pad. The lifting function is only enabled once both load safety devices have been actuated by the coil, sheet metal pack or other load. This means the grab can only lift when it has reliably detected that the load has been correctly gripped.

Conversely, the load safety system also prevents the gripping arms from opening unintentionally while under load. The arms can only be opened once the load has been set down and both load safety devices are no longer under load.

What are the shut-off flaps for?

They automatically stop the closing movement of the gripping arms as soon as the load makes contact with the inside of the grab. This prevents the grab from closing too tightly and damaging the coil or other load. Alternatively, this function can also be controlled electrically using photoelectric sensors.

Folding pads? What are they for?

For handling coils positioned close together or in confined spaces.

The pad is inserted in the folded position and only unfolded once it is inside the coil eye. This is why integrated coil eye detection is always required to ensure precise positioning.

Radio remote control or crane control – which do I need?

  • Radio remote control: All signals are processed directly on the grab. Only the power supply needs to be connected via a plug connection; no additional control cable is required. The grab is therefore supplied with a radio remote control.
  • Crane control: The grab is operated via the existing crane control system. Both the power supply and the control cable must be connected to the crane control system.

Grabs in use

Grabs are used to handle and transport heavy loads safely and efficiently. They are used wherever coils, sheet metal packs, steel components or other materials need to be moved within production, storage or dispatch. Thanks to adjustable or telescopic gripping arms and gripping pads, they can be adapted to different load dimensions and handling requirements. This also enables multiple coils to be handled simultaneously or loads to be picked up safely in confined spaces.

Depending on the application and load, the grabs are individually designed and equipped with suitable drive systems and specialised gripping pads. The aim is always to ensure safe, controlled and material-friendly load handling. This optimises workflows, prevents damage and improves occupational safety.
